Campground Information

Situated high in a mountain valley, Lake Winfield Scott offers visitors year-round recreation opportunities. Lake Winfield Scott is a remote area in the Chattahoochee National Forest but yet only about 15 miles from the small town of Blairsville, located in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains. Overlooking beautiful Lake Winfield Scott this recreation area offers camping, picnicking, boating, fishing and hiking. This campground has two camping loops with a total of 36 campsites available for camping. The north loop campground area is open year round with limited facilities in the winter months and the south loop area is open from mid-April until mid-November. The north loop offers 18 sites on a first-come, first-serve basis including four pull through sites, one double site and one accessible site. All sites feature a tent pad, grill, lantern post and picnic table. The north loop has restrooms and drinking water available. The south loops also have 18 campsites available with tent pad, grill, lantern post and picnic tables as well as a restroom with showers and drinking water. All campsites in the south loop are available by reservation only; please contact Reserve America at 877-444-6777 to make reservations or book on line at www.recreation.gov. For larger groups this recreation area offers a group-camping site that accommodates a maximum of 25 people. The group site is available by reservation only; please contact Reserve America at 877-444-6777 to make reservations or book on line at www.recreation.gov. All campsites are allowed up to 5 people per site as well as 2 vehicles per site. Campers and visitors are required to take all trash to the provided trash dumpsters upon departure.


Fees
Lake Winfield Scott recreation area requires a fee for camping. The campground fees are from $12.00 to $14.00 per site per night. All fees are enforced by management. Campers and visitors are also expected and required to abide by all Forest Service Rules and Regulations while camping or visiting on Forest Service Properties.

Directions
From Blairsville, Georgia take U.S. 19 and 129 south for 10 miles; turn right (west) on Georgia 180 and travel approximately 7 miles, turn left into the Lake Winfield Scott Recreation area. The fee station will be on the right about ½ miles in from the entrance.

 

Recreation Day Use Information

Fishing, swimming, hiking and boating (electric motors only) are popular in this recreation area. Hikers can enjoy numerous trails near this area, the .4 mile Lake Winfield Scott Trail offers a relaxing walk around the lake shore, the Slaughter Gap Trail (2.7 miles) and Jarrard Gap Trail (1 mile) provide access to the Appalachian Trail presenting hikers with limitless opportunities to explore. Fishing and boating are also permitted on the 18-acre lake year round. Boats may have electric motors only and a there is a paved launch located near the head of the lake. An accessible fishing dock is also available. If you are lucky enough to catch a winter time trout, make sure to have a trout stamp on your fishing license. Swimming is a favorite at the beach and picnic area for many. Two covered pavilions are available by reservation only at this recreation area also. The large pavilion is great for family reunions, weddings, birthday parties and just about any other kind of day outing you can think of. The small pavilion is good for the same occasions, just on a smaller scale. The fee for day use which includes fishing, swimming, hiking, picnicking, or the use of the boat ramp is $5.00 per vehicle. A fee is also required to reserve and use the pavilions at this recreation area. All fees are required and enforced by management. Visitors are also expected and required to abide by all Forest Service Rules and Regulations while camping or visiting on Forest Service Properties. Lake Winfield Scott Day Use Recreation Area is open year round with limited facilities in the winter months. This is truly a great place to visit any time of the year, whether you’re camping or just visiting for the day.
